Care and support

Love and intimacy

People with disabilities have the same desires as everybody else when it comes to dating, relationships and finding love. In the same way that people with disabilities can be more susceptible to loneliness, it can also be more challenging for them to meet new friends and potential partners.

There is a lot of support available online for those wishing to meet other people with disabilities.

The British Institute of Learning Disabilities (BILD) is a UK charity that champions the rights of people with disabilities, in particular learning disabilities. Their website includes a directory of resources focusing on all aspects of relationships, including information about dating, sex, safety and sexual health and much more. Much of the information is aimed at people with learning disabilities and includes easy read leaflets.

The Mencap website has an area devoted to the importance of sex and relationships for people with learning disabilities including an FAQ section.

National charity Hft also has some excellent information and advice about friendships and dating for people with learning disabilities.
