Education, Careers and Qualifications for young people

How long do I have to stay in education?

The government has increased the age to which all young people in England are required to continue in education or training to the age of 18. This does not mean you have to stay in school. You will able to choose from:

  • full-time education (for example, at a school or college)
  • an apprenticeship
  • part-time education or training combined with either employment or self-employment for 20 hours or more a week or volunteering for 20 hours or more a week

Why should I stay in education?

By staying in education or training you:

  • are much more likely to improve your qualifications and skills – which means that you are more likely to be employed and get a higher paying job
  • can help to improve the skill levels of the workforce – research confirms how important well-trained and skilled young people are to the success of businesses and the wider economy, as employers are faced with increasingly competitive environments for attracting and retaining staff
  • are likely to have improved health and wellbeing across the whole of your lifetime – staying in education and training may mean you have better social skills and a wider range of opportunities.

What qualifications can I do?

Qualifications include A levels, T Levels, technical and vocational qualifications, applied qualifications, apprenticeships, degrees, and exam retakes.

Can I work and train at the same time?

Yes! Combining work and training can be a great way of getting work experience whilst learning, and here are some of the available options:

  • Supported internship (ages 16 – 24).
  • Apprenticeship.
  • T Level.

I need to retake an exam

Sometimes you may not get the qualification you need and may need to re-sit an exam.

You can do this at a school sixth form, sixth form college or further education college.
