Communication and interaction refers to the way children and young people communicate with those around them, how they response to people and develop social skills and relationships with others.
Communication and interaction needs include:
- speech, language and communication difficulties
- difficulty in communicating with others; they may have difficulty saying what they want to or understanding what is being said to them
- delays in using language and shy away from talking
- difficulty understanding or following social ‘rules’
- autism (ASD)
Support in Devon
The Communication and Interaction Team
The Communication and Interaction (C and I) team may be able to add to the support that schools and settings provide to parents and carers of a child or young person who has communication and interaction needs. This may involve meeting with parents and carers on the school site or offering further advice in relation to particular issues for their child, or both.
The C and I team is a school-based service, therefore, any direct involvement with parents and carers will be carried out in consultation with the school or setting.
Along with schools and professionals from other disciplines, the C and I team help to organise and deliver parent programmes such as Autism and Us and themed workshops.
