What do we mean by missing a lot of school?
Frequent absence describes a situation where a child or young person is missing a significant number of school days.
If your child has been unable to attend school for several weeks or more due to feeling worried, that would be called non-attendance.

Understanding non-attendance and worries
Despite ongoing support from parents and schools, a small number of children still find it very difficult to go to school leading to extended periods of absence, and in some cases not wanting to leave the house.
The longer a child is out of school, the harder it can feel to go back. They may feel behind with their classwork and out of the loop with their friendship groups. They may have missed important school events such as performances, parties or sports matches. This can affect the child’s sense of belonging to their school community, and on top of the worries they already have, this can make things more overwhelming.
