Youth offending teams
Devon’s Youth Offending Service works with young people that get into trouble with the law and with those affected by their behavior. Their primary role is to reduce or prevent further offending.
Youth Offending Teams are made up of multi-agency staff with backgrounds in the police, social work, education, probation and health. The aim is to have someone in the team who can either act on a issue or signpost the young person to the best organisation to do so.
These teams help young people take responsibility for the consequences of their behavior, support them to repair the harm that has been caused, and helps them to re-integrate into their community. This is done in consultation with their parents/carers, those affected and other young people’s services.
They work with young people outside of the court system who have received cautions from the police, as well as those who are more persistent or serious in their offending. Sometimes these young people end up in court and receive community sentences or rarely find themselves in custody.
They also tackle issues like anti-social behavior, poor parental supervision, truancy and school exclusion and substance misuse – all of which can place young people at risk of becoming involved in crime.

Each of the teams also runs a YISP (Youth Inclusion and Support Project) service. These prevention programmes are available for 10-16 year olds and anyone can refer a young person in for support. Contact the youth offending teams for more information or to make a referral.
For those that have specific problems with legal and illegal substance use then Y-SMART works alongside the YOT to provide support and advice to young people and parents. They will work on a voluntary basis with anyone under 18.
