Guide: Types of fostering

Respite care

Respite foster carers provide regular breaks from home, for a few days at a time, to enable children and young people to live with their own family for the rest of the time.

Respite care could ease a situation where a parent has a long-term illness, or provide support to another foster carer as well as help keep families together by giving them time to repair relationships and prevent problems from escalating and leading to family breakdown where children experience a longer term or even permanent separation from their birth parents.
