Here we cover sources of funding relevant to the natural and built heritage, low carbon and ‘green’ initiatives. As with all types of finance, a relevant source might not necessarily be labelled as ‘environment’. For example, 20% of the next round of the European Regional Development Fund will be channelled to low carbon schemes. So think laterally and creatively!
Within Government, while the Departments for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and Energy and Climate Change (DECC) have a stronger focus on the environment, others might well support applicable activity too. Similarly within the Lottery family, the Heritage Lottery Fund is a good starting point while the Big Lottery Fund and others also might present relevant opportunities. The South West Lottery programmes such as Awards for All and Reaching Communities illustrate this point. There are many local sources of advice and information in local government, Environment Agency, National Parks, the Devon Wildlife Trust and other voluntary bodies such as the RSPB.
Increasingly, such organisations are co-operating through the Local Nature Partnership (see www.devonenvironment.org.uk). Please let us know which links you found most useful and others we might add. Good luck with your funding search.
