Fund title: Darwin Initiative – Round 20 Now Open (UK)
Focus of fund/fund aims:
To fund projects that increase biodiversity whilst benefiting local communities.
Stage 1 applications: 17th July 2013. Stage 2 applications: 23th September 2013.
DEFRA is inviting applications for support under the Darwin Initiative for Main projects and Post Projects to commence from 1 April 2014.
Funding under Round 20 is available from the Department for International Development (DFID) or DEFRA; however, it is not possible for one project to apply to both funding pots. It is expected that around 90% of projects will be funded by DFID and around 10% by DEFRA. Successful projects will benefit biodiversity but it is important to note that, in order to attract DFID funding, a project will also need to benefit local communities and contribute to the knowledge base on the links between biodiversity conservation and human welfare and poverty reduction in the host country.
Public or private sector organisations or institutions with expertise in the biodiversity field are eligible to apply.
A total budget of £8 million will be available for this new round; around £6 million for projects in developing countries and up to £2 million specifically for projects in UK Overseas Territories. Applications for UK Overseas Territories should be made separately under Darwin Plus.
