Environmental technologies

Our natural resources and physical geography mean we have emerged as a leader in renewable energy provision, with the highest number of installed projects in south west England.

Our county also lies at the centre of  The South West Marine Energy Park – the first of its kind in the UK, and a marine site off the north coast has been designated as a Demonstration Zone for tidal energy generation.

We are also home to centres of international research with the Centre for Energy and the Environment located at Exeter University, The Met Office in Exeter and the International Centre of Excellence in Marine Science & Technology in Plymouth.

The unique natural environment here, together with the courses run by Bicton College’s EaRTH CentreSouth Devon College’s Energy Centre and Petroc to meet the need for diverse green skills, have allowed biofuel business such as Forest Fuels and New Generation Biogas to prosper.
