Dressmaking for all
Who is this course for?
This is a 4 week course which will develop your dressmaking skills. This course is suitable for complete beginners and those with previous experience. You can work on a project of your choice as well as completing samples of techniques.
This course will cover core dressmaking techniques and skills. Setting up a sewing machine, getting started on a project: choosing a pattern, cutting out, marking up and following the pattern instructions. Techniques covered will include different types of seams, darts, hems and zips. You will create some samples for you to refer back to – your own mini ‘sewing bible’
Support and feedback
To find out how you are getting on, you will complete an individual learning plan and have one-to-one discussions with your tutor.
Additional costs and requirements
Yes, you will need to have your own materials and equipment.
We have Janome sewing machines available for you to use during this course. They are very easy to learn on.
You will need a basic sewing kit – this should include: tape measure, pins (a pin cushion is recommended), hand sewing needles, some polycotton thread (moon thread is ideal), sharp scissors for cutting fabric, general scissors, a stitch ripper, a ruler and pencil. Please can you bring a container to store your equipment in the classroom (a biscuit tin or recycled ice-cream container)
You will need fabric for creating samples – we have some remnants in the workshop which you can use but if you have any leftover or offcuts of fabrics, please bring these with you.
Please wear suitable clothing and bring a notebook and pencil/pen.
Will I have to do anything outside of the session?
To get the most out of this course, you may need to finish work started in class each week ready for the following week. Don’t worry if you don’t have access to a sewing machine at home.
