Making life better by improving your core skills

Learn Devon is committed to helping people improve their life skills and attain the achievement levels they set for themselves. We provide a range of courses to help provide important skills and qualifications, whether it’s to support independent living, help you get a new job, or simply because you want to improve yourself.

We provide numerous courses that are designed to support both employers and employees, offering them transferable skills and ensuring they meet both their legal and commercial needs. For example, we offer one-day ‘Emergency First Aid At Work’ courses, which offer an HSE approved qualification and may help a business be legally compliant. We can also help with everything from food hygiene certification and learning about industry standard accounts software, to marketing and the best recruitment techniques.

Independent Living & Leisure
Learn Devon offers a variety of courses for those facing challenges with learning difficulties and disabilities. Our Independent Living courses are specially designed for those beginning their journey towards independence, whether it’s managing money or learning about the skills needed to enter the workplace.  Those with learning difficulties may also enjoy our Independent Leisure courses, covering things such as art, drama, music and pottery. If you can’t find a course that’s suited to you, please feel free to contact us or call in at one of our centres, where we’ll be happy to discuss how we can provide the course you need.

Get That Job
Ever felt you’d be really good at something but you can’t get that across in a job application or interview? Do you think you have most of the things a job requires, but there are a few key skills you’re missing? Many of our courses can help with this, whether it’s shoring up your English or Maths skills, or letting you add ‘Conversational French’ to make your CV look more well-rounded. We also have a range of ‘Get That Job’ courses, specifically designed to help you handle things such as communication, completing job applications, developing confidence or introducing you to working in specific areas.

Workforce Development
The Workforce Development team supports vocational qualifications to those working within Health and Social Care services, across both adults’ and children’s services. They will support you in achieving your work and career goals – by helping you develop new knowledge and skills, or enhancing what you already have, for your current role or the next role you aspire to.

Languages, English and Maths
Sometimes our core skills could do with a little work. If you feel that you could do with improving your English or Maths, or if you want to work on your foreign languages, we can help.  You may not even know what level your skills are at – but we can help you find out and get you on the right course for you. Whether you’re just looking to improve your basic skills or get an English or Maths GCSE, there’s a course that will suit you. We can also help if English isn’t your first language.

With languages, we have courses at a range of levels in French, German, Italian and Spanish, as well as BSL and Makaton. So whether you want to learn your first simple phrases or to consolidate your already existing language knowledge, we will probably have a course at your level.

If you meet certain eligibility criteria, many courses designed to help you with key skills and qualifications are free. For example, if you don’t have an English or Maths GCSE at level C or above, you should be able to get on one of our GCSE courses for nothing. For more info on who is eligible for concessions, such as those on certain State benefits who are looking to return to work, see our Learning and Support page.

(Please note: Evidence of eligibility for concessions will be required)
