Countdown to this year’s Summer Reading Challenge

INCREDIBLE INTERPLANETARY EXCITEMENT AND A ROCKET-PROPELLED READING EXPERIENCE THAT IS OUT OF THIS WORLD!
We are the Children’s and Young People’s Services Team and you find us with our moon boots still firmly fixed to the beautiful pastures of Devon as we prepare for the summer of Space Hop with its programme of linked themed events in libraries.
In Devon great emphasis has always been placed on the high profile summer holidays and our aim is to fill the six week gap between school terms and encourage regular leisure time reading as much as possible. Our gleaming new secret weapon, Space Hop, will be revealed to the public on Saturday 17 July when we will be launching the whole thing with a special event featuring Mad Science at Exmouth Library (including ,we hope a real rocket launch!). All fifty libraries from Exeter Central through to the smaller community libraries and the eleven mobiles will be open through the summer of course, and most will be handing out Space Hop stickers and medals (and other goodies) to children.
Some of our team members are already beavering away at Mission Control buildings in Exeter and Barnstaple, assembling the vital ingredients of activity packs which will be used by library staff in a number of intergalactically linked locations across the county. Many libraries will be creating wonderful other-worldly events for children of various ages (and their parents, who enjoy these things just as much but won’t admit it). Devon illustrator Woody Fox (Astrosaurs books) is presenting his workshops at several locations, some libraries will be having space animation workshops – (make your own space cartoon film), and we have enlisted the support of our very own place of astronomical excellence, the Norman Lockyer Observatory, in our countywide competition. Our two Children’s Librarians will be zapping around the known world with items such as books and guitars and popping in on libraries to see how the action is going.
All we need is you! Yes, you!!!!
This will be the place all the satellites want to spin round from 17 July to the very end of the school holidays. Wherever you are in Devon you won’t be far from a star attraction (get it?) and we are waiting to add that little bit extra zing – or is it twang, or even zoom? – to your time off this summer.
No need for you to wear helmets and tin foil – just come along as you are! We’ll be soon be ‘lighting the blue touch paper’ and blasting into action …see you there!
5 – 4- 3- 2- 1 …ZOOM!!!!
