Getting ready for winter

Flooding

Posted on: 2 November 2012

After the wettest summer on record, extreme weather conditions are still fresh in the mind as we head into winter.

More than 200 properties and businesses were damaged by flooding which hit Devon in July. This highlights how severe weather can be devastating at any time of year, and also serves as a reminder that there are things we can all do in readiness for winter.

Since the floods, Devon County Council has been dealing with a £5million clear up and repair bill in the worst hit areas of East Devon and the South Hams. The County
Council worked closely with the district councils, the Environment Agency and South West Water to try to reduce the future risk to communities.

A series of Flood Surgeries were held and feedback from the public resulted in a number of immediate measures being taken.

Over 5 million people in England and Wales live and work in properties that are at risk of flooding from rivers or the sea. Are you one of them?
