Councillor Roger Croad, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Communities, said:

“The community preview event on Saturday was a great success, with over 600 people coming along to have a first look at the amazing transformation that has taken place. Since then we have welcomed many more who have been eager to discover what is on offer and make full use of the new facilities.

“The comments from the public have been very encouraging, and I am really pleased to see how users, both young and old, have embraced the new self service machines, wifi technology and impressive IT facilities.

“The ways people use services are changing, which is why it is so important we adapt and improve what we offer to meet the changing needs of our residents, particularly in rapidly growing communities such as Newton Abbot.

“Where we have invested in a range of innovative schemes to strengthen our services for communities, usage has increased dramatically and this looks certain to be the case in Newton Abbot too.

“This shows a clear demand for modern 21st century services, so I am really pleased we have made this considerable investment in the Passmore Edwards Centre. I’m sure residents will continue their support and make full use of these excellent facilities for many years to come.”

A programme of events in underway to showcase what the Passmore Edwards Centre has to offer those young and old and with varying interests and needs. They include a pyjama party film night for teenagers, family history workshops, beginners French, German, Italian and Spanish classes and lots of drawing and craft skills sessions as well as IT tuition for those wanting to learn how to use Facebook and Ebay or Photoshop, drop-in  Maths help and even a special Baby Bounce and Rhyme session and fancy dress storytime for children.

Put together with help and ideas for the local community, the programme of events, culminates on Wednesday 18 July with an official opening ceremony conducted by Devon County Council Chairman Jerry Brook. Local people have also volunteered to help run some events and show people around the new multi-service facilities that include a modern 21st century library, adult and community learning, and services that are supporting people with learning disabilities as well as an IT suite, WIFI technology, café and meeting rooms available for local groups to use.
