Coast

Devon has two coastlines. The south coast boasts the ‘English Riviera’ of Torbay, the much sought-after South Hams area and the fascinating Jurassic coast.

The north coast is beloved by beach lovers and surfers. Woolacombe beach has won best beach in the UK multiple times and was ranked as the 4th best beach in Europe. Both coasts are encompassed by the South West Coast Path, and are much-loved by walkers of all levels.

Countryside

In Devon we’re lucky to have two of the country’s 15 National Parks!

Dartmoor, with its high granite tors, ancient settlements and mythical beginnings makes up a sizeable part of South Devon. In the north-east, Exmoor rolls down to the coast before continuing into Somerset.

Devon has a great variety of countryside, with rivers, hill ranges and forest. This makes the county a great spot for walking, mountain biking, wildlife watching and all kinds of outdoor activities. Exeter

The Cathedral city of Exeter is Devon’s county town. The historic city centre has recently been refurbished with new pedestrianised areas and a modern shopping centre.

The quayside is also just a short walk from the centre and has always proved very popular, especially in the summer. There are plenty of restaurants and bars to visit and enjoy along with a beautiful setting.

Exeter is also home to the University of Exeter, which is ranked in the top ten universities in the country. Being a university city, there is now a great mix of ages, cultures and opportunities.

A 2018 report has named Exeter as one of the ten fastest growing cities in the UK for both jobs and population.

Plymouth

Plymouth is Britain’s only Ocean City, and has a rich seafaring heritage. Consisting of a vibrant waterfront bustling with shops, cafes and bars and a beautiful natural harbour, Plymouth has it all.

Drakes Circus offers a modern indoor shopping experience with over 70 of the UK’s top brand names on offer as well as food outlets and a large car park. Plymouth is also home to the University of Plymouth and prides its self in the diversity and vibrancy of the city.

If you’re looking to escape the city for a while, then Dartmoor National Park is just a short drive away and provides a chance to unwind. While you’re there, why not check out the golden sandy beaches and beautiful surroundings.

Transport

With varied transport links with the rest of the country, Devon is accessible from anywhere.
It has mainline rail stations in Plymouth and Exeter, with lines to London taking as little as two-and-a-half hours.

By road, the M5 Motorway runs directly to Exeter. Meanwhile, the Devon Expressway and North Devon Link Road provide excellent connections to the rest of the county.

If you’re thinking of venturing further, then Devon is also served by ferry links from Plymouth and Exeter Airport – which was recently voted the happiest in the UK!

Keen cyclist? There are also extensive cycle networks across the county, stretching from country to coast!
