You can use this service to apply for a section 178 licence to place a rail, beam or crane over the highway. The cost of a licence is £261 and we require 20 days’ notice.

Before submitting your application please ensure you have read the the guidance provided below in order to submit a successful application.
The work
We will need to know the proposed start and end date of the work.
You will also need to provide a description of the work and the apparatus as well as the weight and size measurements of apparatus.
Location
We will need to know the location of the proposed apparatus.
You will need to upload a 1:200 scale plan that shows the radius of movement, illustrates the area of overhang and shows the loading and unloading areas the crane will operate from.
You’ll also need to tell us if a road closure is required or whether other areas of parking restrictions are affected.
Please also ensure you have checked for other planned work in the area that could be affected by your work.
