Jennie Stephen’s visit to North Devon

by Mairi Hamilton 18 June 2018

I was so impressed by what I heard about how people are supported and how we are starting to embed a culture of Promoting Independence and making it real for people. ― Jennie Stephens, Chief Officer for Adult Care and Health

… a more personalised approach is being taken, talking and taking time to really listen and think innovatively about how to support people to achieve their aspirations and ambitions,

I wanted to share my experience and also the pride I felt during visits to our provider services in Northern Devon recently. I visited Woodland Vale residential home and day care unit for people with dementia, Silverhill Learning disabilities centre and Greenfield residential home in Barnstaple this month. I was so impressed by what I heard about how people are supported and how we are starting to embed a culture of Promoting Independence and making it real for people.

I saw a workforce focused on wanting to really understand what matters for people, I saw how a more personalised approach is being taken, talking and taking time to really listen and think innovatively about how to support people to achieve their aspirations and ambitions, including through the use of technology to both overcome communication challenges that can cause complex behaviour issues and to record tasks so that staff have longer time to spend with people using the services. I heard how this is starting to make a real difference to people receiving services, and staff too. I heard examples of how we are supporting people to achieve their hopes and dreams whilst making more effective use of our resources across service areas.

And I still think we can improve outcomes for people, and that should be something we are all thinking about. Particularly through increased collaboration and join-up with our partners, engaging with our NHS colleagues, primary care and the VCS to further strengthen the impact the health and care system is having.

If you have any thoughts or ideas on this or other approaches then please get involved.
