Trainer’s notes
The following continuing professional development (CPD) modules have been developed to upskill school staff in meeting the needs of UASC. This resource targets schools where there is little experience of working with UASC. These modules can be delivered as a complete series or individually, according to the time available and the level of priority given by the school.
The participants
The modules can be delivered to whole staff or to selected groups according to need. However, it is recommended that all members of staff are involved to enable a common understanding of the needs of UASC and a whole school approach.
The trainer
Trainers’ notes, including references from other useful publications, are provided in the training Powerpoints. The modules should be delivered by the local authority Ethnic Minority Achievement Team or by senior leaders in schools
Summary of units
CPD1 – Introduction – 1 hour
This module is optional; it can be part of another module or delivered as a stand-alone during a staff briefing.
CPD2 – Learning English as an Additional Language – 2 hours
This module upskills teachers on how English is learned as an additional language. Teachers are guided to consider the difficulties of learning English, how English works, and how to start supporting a learner who is new to English.
CDP3 – Teaching English as an Additional Language – 2 hours
This module provides teachers with practical case studies and solutions to teaching English, gives guidance on assessment, teaching 1:1 and teaching learners with low/no literacy in home language.
CPD4 – Supporting UASC to Access the Curriculum – 2 hours
This module helps teachers consider the language pupils need to actively access the curriculum and provides a range of strategies to plan effectively for teaching language through the curriculum. This should increase teacher’s confidence in including and differentiating for UASC pupils.
