Phonics

The phonics resources we have created are based on the Letters and Sounds programme. There are assessments, planning sheets and activities that can be used with children.

You can download our new version of a phonics tracking sheet here.

This is a very simple way of keeping track of which children are where in their phonics learning, with space to record how misunderstandings are being addressed. It could also prove a useful way to share important information with your English subject leader.

Phase 2

Phase 3

  • Phase 3 alien words assessment
This is a list of alien words that can be used to assess children’s progress in phonics.
  • Phase 3 assessment sentences
Ask the children to choose one of these sentences to read to you as part of their phase 3 assessment. Boxes to mark what the children do when reading are provided. These can be completed like a running record.
  • Phase 3 assessment sentences 2
This is an alternative phase 3 reading sentences activity so that children do not become used to the first assessment set of sentences. Here the child reads the whole or part of teh poem. You could dictate part of the poem to assess phase 3 phonics in writing.
  • Phase 3 planning sheets
Planning sheets for weeks 1-10 of phase 3 Letters and Sounds.
  • Blank plan for phonics
This blank plan can be used for any phase and week of the phonics programme.

Phase 4

Phase 5

Phase 5 pathway

The Letters and Sounds programme provides a pathway through each of the phases apart from phase 5. We have created a pathway through the phase that covers a year and includes all of the content. It is available in a Word document to allow schools to adapt and change the pathway to suit their needs.
