English key stage 2

Key stage 2, week 13

Renga

Pair up with someone to write a collaborative poem, using the ‘rules’ of renga – a Japanese form of poetry where stanzas have a repeating syllable count of 5-7-5 then 7-7. Send your lines on to a friend to continue and then pass back for you to add to further.

Key stage 2, week 12

Gobbledygook, gibberish, tommyrot and twaddle

Make up believable definitions for five nonsense words then challenge yourself to use them in a short piece of writing. Fool your family and friends!

Key stage 2, week 11

Virtual museum

Look around you. What objects do you have at home that might interest people in the next century, visitors to a museum 5,000 years from now, or an alien holidaying on Earth..? Write a series of information cards to caption the objects you choose to display.

Key stage 2, week 10

Grow your own

Build important skills as a scientist – grow a plant from seed and make careful observations of the process, recording these clearly.

This plan includes activities written with wider school opening in mind. It could form the basis for a mini-project to unite children working from home and those now back in the classroom.

Key stage 2 week 9

Generation lockdown

Share your story on life in lockdown and you may like to submit your writing to the Generation Lockdown writing competition for a chance to become a published author!

Key stage 2, week 8

A great big thank you

Write a thank you letter to somebody you are grateful to, explaining how they have made a difference to your life recently.

Key stage 2, week 7

Message in a bottle

Justin Somper is the author of the Vampirates series of books. Here, on Authorfy, he sets the challenge of writing a message in a bottle. Are you up to it?

Key stage 2, week 6

In a mood: From book into film

Show off your best film director’s skills to follow an activity from Into Film and create a mood board to demonstrate how to bring a storybook of your choice to life on the silver screen.

Key stage 2, week 5

For sale: The perfect reading den

Design or, if you’re already lucky enough to have it, share a sketch of your perfect place to relax with a good book. Build it! Then… relax with a good book! Create an advertisement to ‘sell’ your spot to your classmates and children your age from other schools.

Key stage 2, week 4

Found poetry

Pick out words and phrases from a non-fiction text and work your writer’s magic to create a poem… or several!

Key stage 2, week 3

Teeny tiny tales

Write a very short story to read to one of your toys, a character from a favourite book, film or video game, or even your pet. Design and make a miniature book to present your teeny tiny tale. Read it aloud! (you might like to go on to create a whole library of titles!).

Key stage 2, week 2

Afterwards

Write a description that creates a strong sense of place and shows how it has changed over time, hinting at what might have happened there. What careful vocabulary and grammar choices can you make to contrast life there before and after an event?

Key stage 2, week 1

Become a film critic

Write a film review of one of three films (or all three if you want!).
