Inclusion

Pupils regularly missing school

What do we mean by regularly missing school?

If a pupil is regularly feeling nervous or worried about attending school, it’s important to recognise the signs of regular absence, which can include missing one or two days every fortnight. This might happen because a pupil feels worried or anxious about school.

While most pupils can be supported to attend school through collaboration between schools and families, as well as by good Ordinarily Available Inclusive Provision, some pupils may require additional help. It’s crucial to understand how attendance issues and worries are connected.

Understanding attendance and worries

Regular absence can cover a range of attendance difficulties, which may include:

  • The pupil is less engaged in lessons.
  • The pupil misses certain lessons on a frequent basis.
  • The pupil misses days of school. These may be sporadic or there may be a pattern, for example every Monday.
  • The pupil is regularly late for school, with increasing delays.
  • Attendance is below 90% over the course of two terms.
