There are a number of services in Devon that can provide additional advice and support when pupils are struggling to attend school.
Attendance Improvement Officers
What they offer
- Termly targeted support meeting for all secondary schools and large primary schools.
- Providing strategies, advice and guidance to schools around attendance.
- Support schools on the early identification of emerging patterns of irregular pupil attendance, whilst paying particular attention to supporting our most vulnerable pupils.
Age range supported: Primary and secondary.
Accessing support
The core offer from the Local Authority is to facilitate targeted support meetings.
Additional time can be purchased through the DES shop.
Devon Public Health Nursing (PHN)
Devon’s PHN team, in particular School nurses, provide a range of support, including for emotional wellbeing and with difficulties around attendance and transitions.
What they offer
Parent support, direct work with young people, support and advice to schools and professionals, online/website support.
Age range supported: Early Years through to Further Education.

The school nursing team can be contacted through your local Public Health Nursing Hub or complete this Request Form for school nurse support.
Early Help
What they offer
This may include support from communities, family and friends, voluntary and community service, universal groups, education and health.
Age range supported: 0-19 years.
