Housing options

Devon is a two-tier authority, with eight district or city councils that have local responsibility for housing. In addition, these councils support people and find solutions for those who are in danger of becoming homeless or need help with housing services. Find your local district, city or borough council.

There are a number of housing options to allow people to live independently, with or without additional support.

  • Renting your home

    Your options if you want to rent a home, including renting from a private landlord and how to access social or affordable housing.

  • Owning your own home

    There are a range of government schemes available to make buying a home more affordable.

  • Shared Lives

    About the work of Shared Lives South West and the service they offer to provide breaks in the homes of their approved carers.

  • Sheltered housing and housing associations

    A mix of charity, council and private company provision aiming to support those with low income.

  • Supported living

    Supported living schemes provide care and support to enable people to live in their own homes.

  • Extra care housing

    Extra care housing comprises self-contained homes on a shared development with on-site care and support.

  • Residential care homes

  • Nursing homes

    Nursing homes provide similar services to residential homes but also specialise in providing care that requires the skills of a qualified nurse.

  • Self-directed support

    The support can be delivered in several different ways, but self-directed support is where the person takes responsibility for managing their own support arrangements.
