Case Study

Exeter Community Energy

Devon County Council has provided start-up funding and training to Exeter Community Energy – a community-owned social enterprise, which aims to create a low-carbon energy supply for the city and deliver benefits to the city, its people and the environment.

The group’s first project, Solar PV 1, will install solar panels on rooftops providing discounted energy for the building occupiers such as schools, public sector organisations and businesses. Investment will be raised through a community share issue, where local people buy shares to cover installation costs.

Gill Wyatt, Chair, said “Income from the sale of electricity and the government’s feed-in-tariff will provide a community fund for more local energy saving projects and a fair rate of return on community shareholders investment. We’re keeping the financial benefits of energy local!”
