Child and family support

Looked-after children who go missing

Children and young people who are looked-after by the Local Authority and who live with foster carers, or in residential children’s homes, are often extremely vulnerable when missing. Even short stays away from their carers can lead to the child or young person being at risk. Action must always be taken and there needs to be a prompt response involving the carers, social care staff and police officers.

Along with the other local authorities in the area they cover, we have an agreed protocol with the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary regarding action to be taken when a looked-after child or young person goes missing.
