SLCN staff training available for online and school delivery
Following the success of the Devon Extended Language Project (DELP), a range of training has been created for primary, secondary and special school staff. Sessions are interactive and have a practical focus to improve outcomes for children and young people with speech, language and communication needs.
SLCN is the largest area of special educational need for primary-age pupils, and impacts on educational attainment, social relationships and self-esteem and wellbeing. affects about 10% of the population and many pupils will require on-going support throughout their school career.
SLCN can present differently over time, and can be hard to identify. Pupils develop many strategies which may mask their difficulties with understanding or using language. They may speak knowledgably and in an articulate way about topics that are very familiar to them, which can give the impression that these skills extend to all areas and that they understand everything that is said to them. Difficulties with understand lesson content can present as disinterest or disruptive behaviour. For some pupils, their SLCN is specifically around social use of language, affecting successful interaction with others. Although knowledge and understanding of SLCN is steadily increasing, there remains a mismatch between the known prevalence and the numbers of pupils being identified and supported. These training courses provide essential information and strategies to enable staff to identify and meet the needs of pupils with SLCN.
