Pupils missing a lot of school, or not attending


What do we mean by missing a lot of school or not attending?

The pupil has already received support via an assess, plan do review process. This has been reviewed continuously over a period of time. This support may also have involvement from external professionals.

  • The pupil may be missing full days, or periods of school at a time.
  • The pupil’s attendance may be at 50-90% or below.

Understanding non-attendance and worries

It’s hoped that through early intervention, ordinarily available inclusive provision and targeted provision, that the attendance of pupils with EBSA will stabilise. However, there can be times when non-attendance becomes entrenched leading to long periods of time away from school due to EBSA, with the pupil struggling to attend over the longer term.

The longer a pupil is off school the harder it can feel for them to return. It is important to continue with regular reviews of the pupil’s stepped support plan. They are likely to require more bespoke and intensive support as part of the plan. It is important this occurs within a flexible approach, with a recognition that there can be many setbacks in a plan to promote a pupil’s re-engagement.
