About the data

Average resident earnings in Devon are below the national average at £25,545 per annum. These lower incomes are broadly reflective of the high rates of employment in sectors with lower pay such as Retail, Health and Tourism. Residence based earnings are higher than workplace based earnings in Devon which suggests residents are commuting outside the county to receive higher pay for work in other areas.

At a district level resident earnings in Exeter are lower than workplace earnings which shows people are commuting into Exeter from neighbouring areas to receive higher rates of pay. Conversely areas such as the South Hams and Mid Devon have higher rates of residence based earnings and lower workplace based earnings. Residence based earnings are less diverse across the county than workplace based with West Devon residents earning an average of £22,757 compared to Mid Devon at £27,408.
