Become an elected representative

There are lots of ways to get involved and help others by becoming an elected representative or taking up a representative position. This can be at school or university, at work, or in your community.

For example, anyone can run to become a local councillor and get directly involved in the decisions affecting your local area.

In Devon, you can stand to be a Town or Parish Councillor, a District Councillor or a County Councillor. Young people can get involved in local democracy too via the Devon Youth Parliament.

You do not need any qualifications. Councillors come from all sorts of backgrounds and, if anything, life experience and a real concern for the people and place where you live is the most important attribute you can bring to the role.

Belonging to a political party is not necessary. Some people stand as independent candidates, separate from political parties.
