Job Categories

Job category data shows employment broken down by defined job roles and is drawn from the Annual Population Survey which is carried out on 320,000 respondents across the UK. The data shows the number of residents in each job category within a geography. Job categories are broken down into 9 distinct types reflecting work roles.

About the data

In Devon professional occupations make up 18% of the labour force and are the largest employment group, although this is below the UK average of 20%. The volumes of those in elementary occupations are 1% greater in Devon compared to the national average at 10.6%. Between districts there are further differences with 46% of jobs in Exeter professional or associate professional compared to 18% in Torridge. Elementary occupations are high in North Devon and West Devon at 16% and 18% respectively where they only make up 8% and 9% in South Hams and Teignbridge.

Devon has higher proportions of people working in low wage/productivity roles such as caring and leisure occupations and conversely a lower proportion of people employed in professional occupations. This contributes to the productivity gap that Devon faces.
