Honour based violence is a type of domestic violence and abuse perpetrated in the name of so-called ‘honour’. It happens when family or community members perceive that a person has brought shame by breaking their honour code. This could include:
- having a relationship outside of marriage
- rejecting a forced marriage
- pregnancy outside of marriage
- interfaith relationships
- seeking divorce
- inappropriate dress or make-up
- kissing in a public place
Honour based violence cuts across all cultures, nationalities, faith groups and communities and transcends national and international boundaries.
