Honour based violence

Honour based violence is a type of domestic violence and abuse perpetrated in the name of so-called ‘honour’. It happens when family or community members perceive that a person has brought shame by breaking their honour code. This could include:

  • having a relationship outside of marriage
  • rejecting a forced marriage
  • pregnancy outside of marriage
  • interfaith relationships
  • seeking divorce
  • inappropriate dress or make-up
  • kissing in a public place

Honour based violence cuts across all cultures, nationalities, faith groups and communities and transcends national and international boundaries.
