Safe cycling

Think about following the Safe Cycling Strategy when you cycle:

Where am I going?

Look ahead and identify the best possible route to avoid hazards and make manoeuvres.

What do I need to know?

Be aware of other road users (including pedestrians) who may be a potential obstruction. You may need to warn them of your intentions by signalling.

What do I need to do?

This will depend on other road users, obstructions and hazards. You may need to stop and signal before starting and/or completing a manoeuvre. You may need to dismount and complete a manoeuvre as a pedestrian.

We offer free National Standard cycle training which will give you tips and techniques for dealing with traffic and demonstrate the Safe Cycling Strategy. We can also teach you how to ride from scratch or help you if you are returning to cycling and want to refresh your abilities.

More cycling tips:

  • Follow the Highway Code – don’t jump red lights and don’t cycle on the pavement unless it’s designated as a cycle path.
  • Watch your speed in wet weather as surfaces may be slippery and it will take you longer to stop.
  • Ride in a strong and confident position well clear of the kerb.
  • Make sure your helmet fits correctly and is of a recognised standard e.g. EN1078.
  • Invest in a good bike in good condition – check brakes, tyres, wheels and keep it lubricated.
  • Use lights and consider wearing bright or reflective clothing, especially in towns, at night and in bad weather.
  • Communicate with other road users, especially at junctions, then you know they’ve seen you. Make eye contact and signal clearly. Use your bell – not all pedestrians can see you.
  • Never cycle along the inside of large vehicles, such as lorries and buses, especially at junctions, where most accidents happen.
  • Finally, be a cycling ambassador. Be polite, courteous and considerate. For more information about using our traffic-free trails, please visit our Share This Space page.
