Travel and transport

Please see the Devon County Council guide to Transport for children with special educational needs for more information about school and college transport.

Devon publishes an Education Transport Policy each academic year which lays out how we plan to help young people with learning difficulties and/or disabilities aged 19 to 25, with their travel arrangements to access further education.

Independent travel training

Independent travel training provides young people from mainstream schools, special schools, pupil referral units and colleges or further education with information from accredited travel trainers.

Before any training commences the travel trainers liaise closely with parents, tutors, social workers and transport officers from the Transport Co-ordination Service.

If you would like your child to take part in this scheme, please contact the Transport Co-ordination Service on 0345 1551019.

Access wallet scheme

The Access Wallet scheme is aimed to make it easier for people with communications difficulties or disabilities to use public transport across the county. Using public transport can be a challenging experience and often this can reduce people with disabilities confidence to travel independently.

Devon County Council has worked in partnership with First Devon & Cornwall, First Great Western and Stagecoach Devon to devise the scheme.

The fluorescent orange wallet lets transport staff know that the carrier may need help with their journey. Inside the wallet is information to help the transport staff better understand the needs of the carrier. The plastic pockets inside can contain information about destination, ticket type and emergency contact details.

Discounted bus travel

The National Bus Pass entitles the pass holder to free off-peak travel on local buses anywhere in England.

We can also provide a Companion Bus Pass to applicants of secondary school age or above who have a severe disability and are only able to access local bus services with the assistance of a travelling companion. To find out more about this and the application process visit the Travel Devon webpage.

Discounted rail travel

Disabled people in Devon may be eligible for discounted rail travel with the Disabled Persons Railcard.

Devon County Council cannot deal with applications for the Disabled Persons Railcard, but for further information visit the Disabled Persons Railcard website or contact the application helpline on 0345 605 0525 (minicom/textphone 0345 601 0132 for customers with hearing impairments).
